Clinical supervision is a process by which therapists meet regularly on a one to one or group basis with their supervisor to discuss their work and their own personal and professional development. Most professional bodies (e.g. UKCP, BACP) have a requirement that their members undertake regular supervision.
Good quality supervision is one of the building blocks of effective, safe, ethical practice for counsellors and psychotherapists. Taking time to think about client work using a meta-perspective, exploring relational dynamics and considering therapeutic interventions can all bring huge benefits for both practitioner and client (and of course the supervisor also continues to learn!) Good supervision promotes the development of the supervisee, upholds the principles of good therapeutic practice and offers a genuinely supportive environment. Confidentiality is maintained by anonymising clients and is bound by a supervision contract.
My approach to supervision is to begin with a focus on the supervisory relationship. Our first meeting will give us both an idea about whether we can work together, and will allow you to assess how I can help you to develop as a practitioner. There needs to be warmth, genuineness, mutual trust and respect between us in order to create an environment safe enough for supervision to take place. It is my intention that the supervisee feels not only held, supported and validated but also appropriately challenged.
